Dick Van Dyke, Film, Julie Andrews, Mary Poppins, Walt Disney

After watching Sound of Music I googled for some more of Julia Andrews movies. Since I had already watched the Princess Diaries I decided to watch the movie which fetched her an academy award. And now I wish I hadn’t.

I liked the main concept of the wonder nanny Mary Poppins popping in into the lives of the Banks family to help the children bond with their parents. But since I had watched Sound of Music just a day earlier I kept comparing the two & Mary Poppins falls short when compared to Fraulein Maria. The jumping into pictures drawn on the streets, the wooden carousel houses galloping away with their riders, the fat man filled with glee may have made a fascinating read in a book but somehow seeing them on screen bored me. All the songs except the “Tuppence” too seemed dull. I loved the dance of the chimney sweeps which was very energetic & nicely done.

Mary Poppins, though a magical creature seemed cold & distant. She didn’t have the warmth one might expect in a nanny. Or maybe that was the whole point since she is so practically perfect? But somehow I liked the chirpy Maria much better than the serious, spit spot 😛 Mary.

Julia Andrews looks beautiful as ever. In some shots I imagined her playing a witch (Bewitched!). Dick Van Dyke was refreshing. So were the Banks family. I failed to understand the whole Mr. Boom thing. Maybe I did not understand this movie. But what little I did I did not much like. A onetime watch for me.

The movie opens on the beautiful mountains of Austria. Being a nature lover & travel buff the movie had me then & there! They could have shown me 3 hours of Austria and I wouldn’t have complained. And then comes Maria putting into words all that I was feeling.

The hills are alive with the sound of music

With songs they have sung a thousand years

The hills fill my heart with the sound of music

My heart wants to sing every song it hears

These are the most wonderful lines I have ever heard.

I first watched Sound Of Music when I was a kid. Our teacher had taken us to the AV room where we had watched the movie sitting cross legged on the floor. The constant songs & the cold air had made me go off to sleep & I had only woken up when the movie ended. After almost 15 years I watched the movie again, this time sitting comfortably on my sofa.

Each & every song in this musical is melodious & a treat to the ears. Also, a person could never tire of watching all the wonderful sights of Austria, the hills, the rivers, the market, the square. The songs have simple words which are easy to understand yet convey a wealth of meaning. While all of them are hummable my personal favourite is “so long farewell” by the children. The kids are absolutely wonderful in this one. “My favourite things” comes a close second. For a person with two left feet when it comes to dancing, “I am sixteen going on seventeen” is special because of the beautiful dance. The eldest von Trapp daughter is a real beauty. The Baroness is nicely played by Eleanor Parker. She is not the typical other woman whose guts you hate. She is stylish, elegant & in fact all things nice. She just isn’t Maria. 🙂 I fell in love with Maria during her very first meeting with Captain VonTrapp. To tell a Captain to his face that whistling is for cats & dogs & not for children & definitely not for her…well, that sort of thing takes courage. Take a bow fraulein Maria! 🙂

The movie is a must watch, and not just once but many times over! This is one movie which pleases all your senses.

Top 5 things I am grateful for

The title says it all. A list of things I am grateful for:

  1. My grandparents: I cannot emphasize enough the important role these two have played in my life. My mother’s parents are my role model & even today I do all things keeping in mind how they would have done it, if they would have liked it & what they would have said about it.
  2. Books: They are my best friends. I am rarely without a book. In fact I am the sort of person who carries a second book with her in case she finishes the first one & doesn’t have anything to read till she gets back home. 🙂
  3. Freedom: A thing which is extremely important to me. I consider myself to be born in a family where I am free to be just me!
  4. Money: I wasn’t born with a silver spoon but have just enough to lead a nice life. And that is enough to make me happy.
  5. Internet: I am addicted. I cannot live without the internet.
