A not so simple village girl meets a not at all simple city boy in this movie which was touted as a remake of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ).

Director: Shashank Khaitan

Actors: Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt

Running time: 133 min

Kavya Pratap Singh (Alia Bhatt), a feisty girl from Ambala comes to Delhi for her wedding shopping & meets Delhi boy Humpty Sharma (Varun Dhawan). They fall in love & Humpty decides to meet with her Dad & ask for her hand in marriage. The father however asks him to prove to him that Humpty would make Kavya a better husband than her fiance Angad (Sidharth Shukla).

What I liked:

  • The locales of the movie are beautiful.
  • The songs are excellent & have a great variety to them. The best I liked was “main tenu samjhawa ki”
  • Alia looks beautiful in all her scenes. Even in the simplest of dresses she is utterly gorgeous.
  • Shaunty & Poplu are hilarious in their roles

What I did not like:

  • The basic message which this movie conveyed. It is slowly becoming a trend that it is OK to ditch a guy right on the day of the marriage. Love/ Marriage triangles are Dharma Productions favourite story lines, be in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, Student of the Year, etc. We need to stop being so casual about relationships. It is not cool. People who ditch their intended on the day of the wedding are jerks. It is OK to be unsure, to be confused. But to drag the confusion till the very end is unfair to everyone, especially the man/ woman you will be ditching. Ask for more time, but really stop leaving people in embarrassing situations just in the name of confusion & personal choice.
  • While I heard that the movie was supposed to be a tribute to DDLJ I could hardly find any similarities. The basic story is same, irresponsible (carefree to put it politely) boy & confused girl fall in love, girl engaged to another, girl’s father a notable villain who hates boy, boy tries to win the girl’s father’s love & then of course the Dad is impressed…and they live happily ever after! But there is a major difference between DDLJ & HSKD. Simran (Kajol) was right in ditching her fiance. He was an MCP who had it coming for him. On the other hand you cannot help feeling sorry for Angad. He deserved better than the very shallow Kavya but it felt bad to see him being ditched without a single thought on anyone’s part.
  • Humpty Sharma’s first shot was him coming out of a common public toilet with a girl. It is difficult to like such a character after that. And no I am not a prude. But a smirking man with a woman in tow in a toilet with his friends standing outside is something I find disgusting. Add to it this is the same man who ties up his professor to a swing & threatens him for passing grades. There are pranks & there are criminal tendencies!
  • Kavya’s father asks Humpty to prove why he is better than Angad. The simplest answer was ‘because Kavya loves me & not him!’. Was there really any need of all the circus he did?

The movie will appeal to school & college kids who like a smiling, dancing, punching tens of villains hero going crazy over a beautiful gaaon ki chori. Alia & Varun are perfect in their roles though after watching her in Highway I think Alia is ready for something better & substantial.

Watch it for free on TV…but even electricity isn’t free now, is it?
